Opinions are necessary.

Hello there,

My name is Georgina, a 21-year-old college student, and I believe everyone must have an opinion.

Check out this example- if you go to a restaurant and order a dish, there are two or maybe three ideas in your head; 1. I might like the food here. 2. I might not like the food here. 3. I’m too hungry to care either way.

Then the waiter brings the dish. You taste it, then an opinion forms in your head — whether you like it, don’t like or simply don’t care- that opinion matters and is necessary. This is because you would do so from your point of view and relay your thoughts and opinions to the person one day when you are recanting your experience to someone else.

Just imagine, however, that you ask someone to tell his/her thoughts on the restaurant he/she visited, and you got this as a response “Sorry, I have no opinion about it.” Well, I know I will be shocked. “How can you not have any opinion on something you have experienced before?”

That is my question-How, can you not have opinions about the world you live in and the people you live in it with?’. It is also okay if your opinion is contrary to popular belief; that is how you see the world.

Opinions have gotten the world developed this far since we think of ways to change a bad experience or ways to improve on a good one, in my opinion (lol), but I’m scared that in some ten to twenty years to come, it will be a crime to have one thanks to the trend known as ‘cancel culture.’ In this culture, you are just ignored if you say something that opposes the general public. This, to me, is stupid; we should probe to know why the person thinks that way and have healthy debates, which will give rise to education and solutions.

When Colin Kaepernick knelt for the national anthem some years back, if he had been questioned about why he had done that, if he had been listened to, the topic discussed extensively and people had been educated I believe a lot of the police shootings could have been prevented. Instead what happened…He was cancelled.

Having an opinion doesn’t mean, be judgmental towards others. I will discuss more on that in my next post.

For today, however, I urge you to have opinions.

Have a nice day.
